Volunteer’s Christmas Dinner

A Huge Thank You to All Our Volunteers

James Rimmer receiving his certificate from David Smith, Hawk and Owl Trust Trustee

Volunteers at the Hawk and Owl Trust’s Sculthorpe Moor Community Nature Reserve were thanked by staff and trustees at a recent Christmas celebration lunch. All the volunteers who help at the reserve were thanked and those who had clocked up over 25 days worth of volunteer hours this year were presented with certificates. One volunteer, James Rimmer, has contributed an amazing 100 days worth of volunteer time this year. Each volunteer will receive a book as a token of thanks, generously donated by wildsounds.com who are corporate sponsors of the reserve.

There are over 60 volunteers on the team at Sculthorpe Moor Community Nature Reserve and staff at the local haven for rare and important wildlife would find it difficult to continue their conservation and education work without the volunteer support. The combined hours of the volunteer team amounted to over 1,400 days, equivalent to an extra 3 people working on the reserve every single day of the year.

Volunteers at the reserve get involved in a varied range of tasks. Some meet visitors to the reserve in the visitor centre and let them know details of the facilities available and where to find animals and birds on the reserve. Some volunteer as wardens, going out around the reserve to keep an eye out for wildlife and assist visitors. Others help with management of the habitats on the reserve, clearing scrub or cutting the fen. Yet others help with school groups and outreach events or work behind the scenes helping with administration tasks.

James Rimmer said “I really enjoy volunteering at Sculthorpe because I like working outside and enjoy the company of the other volunteers.”

One of James’s favourite tasks is helping to look after the warden, Nigel Middleton’s highland cattle that graze parts of the reserve.
