Sending Corpses for Examination

The National Predatory Bird Monitoring Scheme (PBMS) carries out post mortem examinations

If you find the corpse of a bird of prey or owl in the UK you can add to scientific knowledge. The national Predatory Bird Monitoring Scheme examines any predatory bird corpse, and is particularly interested in sparrowhawk, barn owl, kestrel and red kite which are especially vulnerable to contaminants.

Review the guidance on how to get the PBMS to send you approved packaging and

  • when picking up a bird ensure it is safe, especially at the roadside
  • minimise skin contact; use an inverted plastic bag for handling
  • ALWAYS wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling
