Shapwick Moor Receives Saplings From Garden Centre

THE Hawk and Owl Trust’s 55 hectare nature reserve, near Glastonbury, has this spring (2014) been presented with 50 young trees thanks to a Somerset Garden Centre.
Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre donated the saplings to the Trust for use on it’s Shapwick Moor Nature Reserve near Glastonbury.

Philip Holms, Somerset Trustee for the Hawk and Owl Trust, and responsible for development of Shapwick Moor, which is located just off the A39 at TA7 9NW on the Shapwick to Meare Road, said:

“Thanks to the garden centre’s kind donation we will be able to establish a new hedge as screening to our bird observation hide and increase opportunities for wildlife viewing for all our visitors.”

The Hawk and Owl Trust is a national charity dedicated to conserving owls and other birds of prey in the wild. It’s main office is in Taunton and it has nature reserves in Somerset, Norfolk and Yorkshire. It aims to increase knowledge and appreciation of birds of prey through the creation and management of nesting, roosting and feeding habitats.

Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre at Monkton Heathfield in Taunton runs the sapling giveaway scheme annually. Schools, charities and not-for-profit organisations were invited to receive groups of between 50 and 100 small indigenous British varieties, known as whips.

Andrew Pitman, Plant Manager of the award-winning, independent family-run garden centre, explained:

“We have held our sapling giveaway every year and it is always extremely popular. We offer the saplings to charities, communities, schools and other worthy causes and it is always really interesting to see the different projects people are working on.

“Earlier this year we set aside 2,014 small sapling trees, which were allocated to worthy causes on a first come, first served basis. We’re delighted to have helped the Hawk and Owl Trust with its conservation work in Somerset.”
