David says “I first read this Jack London story when I was in Afghanistan. I was already familiar with his story White Fang which had been filmed several times. I carried my copy of Jack London short stories everywhere I went and underlined passages that would make good narration. One day I flew up to Bamiyan with a crowd of Australian tourists to see the huge statues carved out of the red rock cliff face. The plane broke as we landed. What had been a 30 minute flight turned into an 8 hour journey back by road. By the end of the journey I’d made up my mind to make the film. I knew that I wanted Orson Welles to speak the narration. After you’ve seen the film I will tell you how I eventually tracked him down”.
