Shapwick Moor News Update – February 2016

This News Update from the Hawk and Owl Trusts reserve at Shapwick Moor has been provided by Simon Beard, via the North Somerset and Bristol Group February 2016 Newsletter

On the work day which took place on Sunday 30 January, the recently dug gutters in the field alongside the drove were looking pleasingly full and the water levels in the ditches were good.  After some very squelchy work on the extra scrape in the field below the hide the last of the brash was cleared and burned by the wonderful team from St. Osmund’s School.  It was very satisfying looking at the open ditch that now connects to Black Ditch and quite difficult to visualise how overwhelmed it was a couple of years ago.

The container has been moved in readiness for the new equipment/volunteers building to take shape later in 2016, it is hoped work will start in June. The main drove has been improved with considerable amounts of stone, although there are still some problem areas with drainage and springs. Also stone is more expensive than you think and doesn’t go as far as one would like!

The next work day will be Sunday 28 February, full details can be found on our events page. As all the brash has finally been burned, this is likely be a bit of a housekeeping/tidying around sort of day – unless the rest of the hedging plants have arrived by then!  Meet as usual at 10.00am at the car park to the reserve.
