On Wednesday 8th July, the North Somerset and Bristol Group were part of the Countryside Day organised by the North Somerset Agricultural Society.

Approximately 2,600 primary school children from Bristol and North Somerset attended the day and learned about different aspects of the journey their food takes from plough to plate. Pupils met a variety of animals in the ‘farmyard’, watched working demonstrations of mowing, baling, combining, milling, milking, butter making and eggs hatching. They were shown sides of meat, different varieties of vegetables and learned about the many uses of wool.

An area was provided to give an idea of the huge range of traditional rural crafts which are still being practised to varying degrees today. These included felt making, dry stone walling, iron working, stick making and many others. The Hawk and Owl Trust was represented in this section with Hawk and Owl Trust Conservation Officer for the South West Chris Sperring. Chris talked about owls and wildlife and dissected owl pellets with the children.
