It is with great sadness that we heard that Geoff Williamson, a long standing volunteer for the Hawk and Owl Trust and founder member of our East Midlands Group passed away at the beginning of November. He was a inspirational part of the team and he will be very sadly missed by many of us who knew him.
Lin Murray went to the funeral on behalf of the Trust and to pay our respects to Geoff’s wonderful family.
‘I have never seen so many people squeezing into a crematorium. There were people from all eras of Geoff’s life, people who he had kept in touch with through the years. He made friends very easily and was a great guy to know. It was an emotional service and my heart goes out to his family. Geoff’s colleagues from the East Midland’s Group turned out in force as we said goodbye to a great raptor worker. Goodbye Geoff, it has been an absolute pleasure’.
Below are a few words from HOT colleague Roger Moses:
“I’ve not known Geoff very long, only about 7 years, since I started my stint on the Rutland Birdfair stand; good example of how the Birdfair gives the opportunity to link up far flung members. He was a willing volunteer, always good with the public, and a very likable man. After a couple of years we managed to persuade him to set up an East Midlands Group, which has been a great success, and as you know, makes Birdfair a lot easier to resource. He had been heavily involved in the Red Kite reintroduction in Rockingham Forest, Northants [see Geoff with two of the young kites below] and volunteered for both the RSPB and the Forestry Commission. We looked forward to his annual visits to the HOT Reserve on the Somerset Levels to exchange news and drink beer (poss the other way round). In spite of ill health, he did three day duty at the 2015 Birdfair at Rutland Water. I think I will carry the image of him on a tractor trailer, in his element in Kent at the Elmley Reserve Members Day in May 2015, with old friends and amongst the wild birds he loved so much [see image below]. He will be sadly missed. “
