Great Success for the Hawk and Owl Trusts East Midlands Group

This news post update has been supplied by Simon Dudhill of the East Midlands Group of the Hawk and Owl Trust

As reported on 7 November 2015, the Hawk & Owl Trust East Midlands Group successfully secured funding from the Cory Conservation Grant scheme to supply and erect barn owl boxes for farmers and landowners within the county of Rutland.  East Midlands Group Chairman Simon Dudhill reports that interest and demand has far exceeded their expectation, and they are working extremely hard to meet the demand (to visit the Cory Environmental website, please Click Here).

They had originally hoped to achieve six sites, but numbers to date stand at twenty four. All the sites have now been visited, and approved as suitable locations.  Such has been the level of interest and demand they have had to go back to Cory’s to apply for additional funding, which was also approved last week.  The group are now in the process of visiting the sites again to erect the boxes in time for the breeding season. Committee member, John Smith, has spent many hours in his garage building and preparing the boxes. Even an hour on Christmas morning! Simon and John are also very grateful for the help Geoff Clark has given them at Sculthorpe Moor in cutting out fifteen of the boxes for them.

One of the conditions of being eligible for a box was the farmer or landowner had to live inside the county of Rutland. The group received several applications from farmers and landowners outside the county. Those will now be re-contacted with a view to explaining and assisting them in trying to obtain funding through the Farmland Bird of Prey Initiative, a scheme initiated by the trust at Sculthorpe, which the group will be launching in the counties outside of Rutland but within their catchment area.

There is still some funding available within Rutland, but is now on a first come first served basis. If any farmer or landowner is interested in having a survey in the Rutland area, and subsequently if suitable, an owl box erected on their property, or would like to have a box through the Farmland Bird of Prey Initiative, then please email the East Midlands Group Chairman, Simon Dudhill, by Clicking Here or call Simon on 07798 713735. Thank you
