Sculthorpe Moor Nature Reserve Volunteers Win the Highly Commended Boldero Award for Access to Nature

On the evening of Thursday 24th September, the amazing volunteers from the Hawk and Owl Trust’s Sculthorpe Moor Community Nature Reserve were awarded the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England’s Highly Commended Boldero Award. The Award was for the incredible work they have done in planning, designing and building the brand new four metre high tower-hide and 80 metre, 1 in 20 gradient aerial walkway, which is now open for all to enjoy.

The commitment and dedication of this great group of volunteers has helped save the Hawk and Owl Trust over £140,000 in labour costs, which would have otherwise had to be spent in the boardwalk and hides construction.  The prestigious event, hosted by the Norfolk branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), was held in the magnificent settings of the Great Hospital in Norwich.

At Sculthorpe Moor Nature Reserve the volunteers are a crucial part of the team, as without them, the reserve would not be what it is today, a fantastic site to get close to nature and experience the buzz you get from seeing a kingfisher or maybe a marsh harrier, from one of our hides.  Reserve Warden Nigel Middleton said “From the day we took over the reserve over 10 years ago, our band of volunteers have been with us every step of the way”

However, now that the new hide and boardwalk is complete, our volunteers aren’t resting on their laurels.  Work has already begun on building the final stretch of riverside boardwalk to make Sculthorpe Moor 100% fully accessible to everyone of all abilities.  If you would like to help ‘Sponsor a Board’ for only £10 or would like to join our team of volunteers then please call the reserve on 01328 856 788 or just drop in.

We hope to see you soon,  The Sculthorpe Moor Team
