Big ‘thank you’ to Hawk and Owl Trust North Somerset Group for Equipment Donation

The  lovely members of the North Somerset H&OT Group have donated six pairs of top quality loppers to enhance the tool stocks at Shapwick Moor. These tools have been needed urgently to help cut back willows along the ditch sides, one of the most important habitats on the reserve.

Pictured here are Carrie Riches (Chair of local Group), Simon Beard (H&OT Community Officer- Shapwick Moor) & Pat Rogers, (local group member and Treasurer) as they presented the new tools on the latest workday on the Moor.

The loppers were in action within a few hours of arriving!

The Shapwick Work day can be described thus…. wet & windy! Six brave souls faced the elements and managed to paint the entire of the new hide with preservative and put in a pipe from the guttering of the hide to collect rainwater to fill up neighbouring pond. Work on our new hide is definitely nearing completion!

The new track has suffered a lot from the incredibly wet winter and may need some repairs in the spring. Fortunately for us, the main flooded areas on the Somerset Levels are slightly south of our reserve and our vegetation has not been harmed. Our thoughts are with our flooded neighbours though…
