The ICBP Falconry Weekend 31st Aug/1st Sept 2013
The South Gloucestershire Group of the Hawk and Owl Trust was pleased to attend for the 3rd year running the Falconry Weekend at the International Centre for Birds of Prey in Newent, Gloucestershire.
The Centre is run by Hawk and Owl Trust trustee Jemima Parry-Jones and is home to one of the largest collections of Birds of Prey and Owls in the UK.
This year the Falconry Weekend saw the launch of The Philip Glasier Falconry Museum. Philip is the father of Jemima and a founder of the Hawk and Owl Trust. The museum will contain artifacts and memories of Falconry from times past and will be a memorial to a great falconer and pioneer of Bird of Prey conservation.
Jemima, her team and guest falconers filled the weekend with great flying displays, seminars, good food and plenty of trade stands to spend your hard earned cash, plus the opportunity to wander around the centre.
The South Glos group set off from the outskirts of Bristol at 6am on the Saturday morning with their trailer loaded full of Hawk and Owl Trust material, we arrived at Newent, set-up and was ready for the opening at 9am. The team was kept occupied with a steady number of visitors showing an interest in our conservation work through out the day.
From our pitch alongside the flying field we had a good vantage point to watch the activities throughout the day, which was basked in glorious sunshine. The group left for home at 6pm, unable to stay for the BBQ and beer as we have our own birds at home to look after.
We returned the following morning to an equally glorious day, great flying displays and good company. The work of the Hawk and Owl Trust was spread amongst the many Falconers and Bird of Prey/Owl fans in attendance hopefully giving the conservation of these truly magnificent birds much needed help.
Thank you to Jemima, her team, Bob Dalton and everyone else involved in making the weekend an amazing event. Thanks go to my team for giving up their weekend, their commitment and dedication to the group and the Trust.
After packing away at the end of the event and returning the trailer to its storage space we got home at 7pm and I looked forward to a hard earned rest with a day off work the following day.
